When it seems like you always have a sore throat, you should contact a doctor. Especially if you have difficulty swallowing, pain or swelling in your throat. Leaving this untreated can lead to swollen lymph nodes, yellow or white coatings on or around your tonsils, difficulty breathing, and loss of appetite. It can also cause loss of your voice, redness and pain in your throat. A doctor can tell you what is causing your throat problems. If a doctor diagnosis you with tonsillitis this means your tonsils are swollen and pharyngitis, is used to describe swelling or pain in your throat. You can end up with a sore throat from several different factors such as viral infections, bacterial infections and also allergies. A doctor will be able to diagnose if you have a viral or bacterial infection.

Common Viral and Bacterial Infections

Influenza Virus – This is also known as the flu. It is a severe condition that is caused by a viral infection. This type of virus attacks the upper respiratory system, along with your throat and nose. This is not the same thing as stomach flu though.

Mononucleosis – This is a condition that is passed through your saliva and transmitted by eating or drinking after somebody that has it, or kissing them, sneezing, coughing or any other ways that you can come into contact with infected saliva.

Strep Throat – Streptococcus pyogenes is a bacterium that will invade tissues in the throat. This will cause inflammation in your tonsils and throat. This is highly contagious and care should be taken to not pass it to others.
