What is the Emotional Freedom Technique?

Posted by Phineas Gray on December, 2014

The Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, is a powerful and drug-free way that you can reduce your stress and the painful emotions that are associated with your past experiences, thoughts, etc. In reference to the traditional types of Chinese Medicine, there are a number of points in your body that can be tapped gently with the very tips of your fingers with one of your hands, while you repeat a number of relevant phrases.

The theory that is behind this old technique involves the meridians, or your body’s field of energy. No matter if you believe in the existence of energy fields, or not, you may be curious about trying this the next time that you feel any type of negative emotion.

The first step of this process is to define any type of negative issues or emotions that may be causing you any type of problem, then to identify the intensity of this with a level of zero up to 10. In this case, zero is going to be non-existent and 10 will be the most severe.

The next step will be to determine your setup phrase. This has to be specific. This phrase will be what you repeat while dealing with the negative issue or problem that you are facing. When you begin to tap your ‘karate chop point,’ which is the soft spot that is on the side of either of your hands, just beneath the little finger, you will repeat this phrase. Tap the point about seven times, but you will not have to necessarily count.

You will also need to create a reminder phrase. This is what is spoken while you are tapping the other meridian points on your body. These are going to be a brief and small reminder of your original setup phrase. This can be beneficial in situations where you feel extremely stressed.

There are a number of different points on your body that can be used for this technique, including under your nose, under your eye, the outer eye, your inner eyebrow and on your chin, among others. In some cases, learning the technique with the help of a professional can be beneficial. While it is a technique that can be self-taught, help and guidance can go a long way in ensuring that you get the maximum benefits from the EFT technique.
